Reading books without illustrations has always made me feel both joyful and distressed. Even though reading broadens one’s horizons, the process of reading is so dull if the book is not illustrated. Many people find it increasingly difficult to turn the pages when reading such books. Sometimes reading a book like that resembles accomplishing a mission. One feels a bit more joyful every time when one turns a page, and even feels a sense of accomplishment after finishing the whole book, especially if it is a big one. I began to ponder on what inspired Márquez to write“One Hundred Years of Solitude”when I was reading it. In order to increase the pleasure of reading the book, I adjusted the spacing and font size on each page. As the page number increases, the spacing and font size increase gradually too and the number of words decreases. Consequently, the reader will turn the pages more and more quickly. Meanwhile, wider spacing will ease the tension of reading. This is not a project to be completed at once; instead, it is a relatively long-term experiment. I need to make several different layout models for books of different volumes so as to apply these models to more kinds of books.
